South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to prioritize North Korea following an accord with Iran. During the G7 summit in France, where Lee held discussions with Trump, he conveyed that the U.S. leader suggested it was the appropriate moment to tackle North Korea’s challenges.

Lee expressed concerns that the sanctions levied against North Korea for its nuclear weapons development have waned in effectiveness. He attributed this to the strengthening military ties between North Korea and Russia, particularly in the context of the Ukraine conflict. Lee emphasized that even limited Russian support significantly aids Pyongyang.

Trump’s recent social media activity has spurred speculation about a potential diplomatic renewal with North Korea. He posted an image of himself alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, reminiscent of their landmark 2018 meeting in Singapore, suggesting a possible revival of dialogue.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons program continues to pose a substantial security threat in East Asia. The Korean Peninsula remains in a state of technical war since the Korean War (1950-53) concluded with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
