Ukraine launched an extensive drone attack on Moscow and nearby regions, coinciding with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections. The assault resulted in at least three fatalities and inflicted damage on an oil refinery, Russian authorities reported.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin disclosed that over 1,600 drones had been intercepted since Saturday, with approximately 450 targeting the capital city. Some of these drones managed to reach the Moscow Oil Refinery, while a residential building in the Moscow region also sustained damage. Emergency services responded by evacuating around 400 residents from a damaged 21-story apartment building.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the strikes were aimed at crucial Russian energy and logistics infrastructure. The recent attacks highlight Ukraine’s growing use of long-range drones and domestically produced weapons to target strategic locations deep within Russia, focusing particularly on energy facilities.
The timing of the attack coincided with the conclusion of Russia’s first parliamentary election since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian officials have accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the electoral process through these actions, while Kyiv continues its strategy against Russian military and energy infrastructure.
