Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to expand the country’s military forces, increasing the number of active-duty servicemen by 15,500 to a total of 1,550,500. The decree also raises the total authorized strength of the armed forces to 2,441,630 personnel. This move marks the fourth time Russia has expanded its military forces in 2026, following similar increases in March, June, and July, which collectively added tens of thousands of positions to the military.

Previously, Russia announced a partial mobilization in September 2022, which was a significant military move in response to international pressures and conflicts. The current decree, while increasing the authorized number of troops, does not itself announce a new mobilization effort.
