India is progressing with its plan to procure five additional S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, as Moscow has submitted a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The Cabinet Committee on Security is expected to make a final decision once the price discussions conclude and the Finance Ministry grants its approval. India initially signed a contract for five S-400 systems in 2018 valued at $5.43 billion, with the final delivery anticipated by November 2026.
The addition of these advanced air defense systems is aimed at bolstering India’s military capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector facing China. The effectiveness of the S-400 was notably demonstrated during India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025, enhancing the argument for expanding its S-400 arsenal. The systems’ performance has reinforced India’s commitment to enhancing its air defense strategy.
In parallel, India has yet to reach a decision on the acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets, despite the Indian Air Force’s interest in the proposal. This interest comes as China continues to deploy its J-20 stealth fighters in the Tibetan region, posing a strategic challenge to India.
The proposed acquisition of additional S-400 systems is expected to be a key topic in broader India-Russia defense talks. These discussions are likely to gain further momentum with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit in September, where defense collaboration will likely be a significant agenda item.
