The United States is contemplating the termination of a temporary waiver that has permitted countries, including India, to import oil from Russia, as revealed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This waiver was initially established in March to mitigate disruptions in the global energy markets due to tensions in the Middle East and has been extended twice, with the current extension due to expire on June 17.

During a congressional committee meeting, Rubio explained that the waiver was always intended to be a short-term solution to stabilize global oil supplies. He emphasized that the broader US policy continues to focus on sanctions targeting Russian energy exports. Rubio also mentioned that the US hopes to end the waiver at the earliest feasible opportunity, although the final decision will be made by the Treasury Department.

India, which resumed purchasing Russian crude oil due to disruptions in energy supplies from the Gulf region caused by regional conflicts and shipping issues around the Strait of Hormuz, could be significantly impacted if the waiver is withdrawn. Russian oil has been a vital source for India, offering competitive pricing and steady availability.

The United States has urged India to diversify its energy imports and lessen its reliance on Russian oil. Recent discussions between Washington and New Delhi have included commitments to energy sourcing as part of broader trade and economic negotiations.

Should the waiver not be extended past June 17, India may need to increase imports from other sources, which could result in higher energy costs and necessitate changes in its crude procurement strategy.
