Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in fostering collaboration between ASEAN and Russia, following the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. The summit saw active participation from Vietnam, with Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighting the country’s pivotal contributions towards its success. Vietnam played a crucial role in promoting ASEAN’s central position while supporting initiatives to enhance the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.
Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng led the Vietnamese delegation, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, along with adherence to international law. The delegation proposed broadening cooperation in vital sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These areas are seen as crucial for strengthening ties and ensuring mutual benefits for both ASEAN and Russia.
The summit resulted in the adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a significant aspect of this partnership. In a move demonstrating its commitment to future regional collaboration, Vietnam announced it will host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, aiming to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the region.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reiterated their dedication to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their talks centered on expanding cooperation in a variety of fields, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport, highlighting the broad scope of their bilateral relationship.
Vietnam believes that the outcomes of the summit will significantly enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contributing to regional stability and opening new avenues for economic growth and cooperation throughout Eurasia. The strengthened ties are expected to create a foundation for future collaborative efforts, supporting both regional security and prosperity.
