Conducted by Control Union Certifications, a GSTC-accredited body, the certification audit examined the resort’s commitment to sustainable practices across management, socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental areas.
Key to the resort’s sustainability efforts are initiatives aimed at conserving water and energy, reducing food waste, sourcing locally, protecting oceans, and engaging with the community in Phuket. An Oklin Food Waste Composter is at the forefront of its food-waste reduction program, capable of processing roughly 125 kilograms of waste daily, reducing it by 80-90% within 24 hours, and producing about 360 kilograms of fertilizer monthly for local entities. Furthermore, an AI-driven food-waste monitoring system aids culinary teams in minimizing waste by optimizing portion sizes, purchasing, and inventory management.
In addition to on-site initiatives, the resort is actively involved in environmental preservation through Proud Kamala, a program dedicated to maintaining three kilometers of Kamala Beach and minimizing marine waste. This effort is complemented by the Ocean For All Foundation’s “License to Clean” initiative, which deploys a specialized catamaran to collect and sort waste from the coastal waters for recycling, reuse, or disposal.
Water conservation measures include utilizing treated wastewater for 80% of landscape irrigation needs, alongside rainwater harvesting systems to further reduce reliance on potable water. The resort’s commitment to energy efficiency is underscored by its LEED Gold certification, achieved through the implementation of LED lighting, motion sensors, lighting controls, and energy monitoring, all aimed at delivering approximately 25% energy savings.
Local sourcing also plays a crucial role in the resort’s sustainability strategy. Collaborating with over 19 local farmers and communities, including those in Phang Nga, the resort supports a circular economy by using compost-generated fertilizer for agriculture. Additionally, at the Sipping Tiger bar, partnerships with Chulalongkorn and Kasetsart universities focus on creating unique cocktails using locally sourced botanicals, including ingredients that are often overlooked. General Manager Bjorn Courage emphasizes that the GSTC certification not only validates their current efforts but also provides a framework for ongoing enhancements in their environmental and community-focused initiatives.
