Audrey Werro delivered a stellar performance at the Ultimate Championships in Budapest, clinching victory in the women’s 800m race and securing the top prize of $150,000. The 22-year-old from Switzerland completed the race in 1:55.88, outperforming Britain’s Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, who finished second in 1:56.26, and Femke Broeders-Bol, who took third place. Werro dominated the race from the start, maintaining her lead and accelerating in the final 300 meters, capping off a remarkable season where she claimed victory in 14 out of 15 outdoor races, solidifying her status as a leading figure in the 800m discipline.
Despite facing challenges this season due to injuries, Hodgkinson expressed pride in her performance. She has been recovering from a hamstring injury that hindered her ability to complete the necessary speed training to effectively compete with Werro. Nonetheless, her second-place finish marked a commendable comeback in the competitive field.
In other events at the championships, Georgia Hunter Bell secured a second-place finish in the women’s 1500m, just behind Poland’s Klaudia Kazimierska. Kazimierska crossed the finish line with a time of 3:57.55, a mere 0.15 seconds ahead of Hunter Bell. This performance earned Hunter Bell a $75,000 prize, continuing a strong season that has seen her achieve major championship victories.
Additionally, the women’s 100m race witnessed a standout performance, with world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden clocking the fastest time of the year at 10.62 seconds. Olympic champion Julien Alfred followed closely, finishing second with a time of 10.74 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson claimed third place with a time of 10.76 seconds.
