In an effort to highlight Instagram’s teen safety features, Meta has enlisted parenting, lifestyle, and mental health influencers amid growing global scrutiny over children’s access to social media. The tech giant has facilitated events and sponsored content to showcase its Teen Accounts, which are equipped with additional restrictions and parental controls for users aged 13 to 17. This initiative comes as governments worldwide, including Australia, consider implementing stricter regulations on social media usage by minors.
Recently, Meta organized an event in Australia, targeting parenting influencers, just before the country enacted social media restrictions for those under 16. These influencers were encouraged to advocate for the company’s safety tools and suggest that blanket bans may not be the most effective measure for protecting young users. According to a report by the Tech Transparency Project, similar campaigns have been carried out in other countries like Indonesia and India, especially when governmental bodies were deliberating on age restrictions. In some instances, influencers were financially compensated to promote Meta’s safety features, and the company also collaborated with organizations that receive its financial backing.
Meta’s stated objective is to ensure that parents are well-informed about the safety measures available for teenagers. The company contends that blanket bans might inadvertently drive young users towards less regulated online platforms. Instagram’s Teen Accounts offer various controls, such as restrictions on who can contact teenagers, limits on exposure to sensitive content, and tools for parental supervision. Despite these efforts, critics argue that such measures do not entirely shield young users from potentially harmful material.
This ongoing debate is occurring as more countries consider implementing measures like age verification, parental controls, or outright social media bans for children. While Australia has already introduced a ban for those under 16, other nations are contemplating similar actions. However, the effectiveness of these restrictions remains contentious. Opponents of bans argue that they can be challenging to enforce and may hinder access to valuable information and communication for young people. On the other hand, child-safety advocates believe social media platforms have not sufficiently safeguarded teenagers. This increasing scrutiny is mounting pressure on Meta and other tech companies to prove that their platforms can offer meaningful protection for younger users.
