Czech President Petr Pavel has called for NATO to adopt a stronger approach in response to Russia’s ongoing provocations near the alliance’s eastern borders. Expressing concern that tepid reactions could embolden Moscow, Pavel emphasized the need for NATO to counteract Russia’s deliberate testing of its limits, which includes airspace violations and military provocations designed to avoid triggering Article 5, NATO’s collective defense clause.

As a former chair of NATO’s military committee and a retired general, Pavel suggested that NATO should consider “decisive” responses, such as shooting down unauthorized aircraft entering allied airspace. He also proposed asymmetric measures like disrupting Russian internet systems, targeting satellite capabilities, or further isolating Russian banks from global financial networks. According to Pavel, Russia is more responsive to displays of power than to diplomatic cautions, and he warned that insufficient action might prompt Moscow to escalate its activities in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.

Pavel advocated for increased sanctions on Russia and advised Western allies to link any potential sanctions relief to a ceasefire and peace talks in Ukraine. He criticized Europe for its over-reliance on U.S. leadership, arguing that the continent needs to develop its own long-term strategy for dealing with Russia and securing its future.

The Czech president’s remarks come amidst heightened concerns within NATO over regional security and the ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Ukraine. Pavel’s call for a more assertive European role in shaping security arrangements underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to the challenges posed by Russia.
