During hot summer nights, getting a restful sleep can be a challenge, as excessive heat negatively impacts both the quality and duration of sleep. Experts note that deep sleep, essential for the body’s recovery and rejuvenation, is particularly affected when temperatures rise. Ideally, bedroom temperatures should range between 16°C and 18°C, but when they climb above 24°C, restless nights often ensue.

To combat the discomfort of sleeping in a heatwave, several simple strategies can be employed to enhance comfort and promote cooler sleep. Using breathable bedding and a mattress that does not retain heat is a good starting point. Natural materials like wool, bamboo, and linen are recommended for their ability to circulate air and wick moisture away from the body, making them suitable for warmer conditions.

If changing mattresses isn’t feasible, opting for a cooling mattress topper crafted from breathable materials can provide much-needed relief. Linen sheets and pillowcases are also favorable options, as they stay light and comfortable, even on humid evenings. A quick pre-sleep trick is to place pillowcases or lightweight pajamas in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes, offering temporary coolness that may facilitate falling asleep when it’s warm.

Additionally, cooling duvets designed to regulate body temperature can help prevent overheating. Fans or air coolers equipped with misting functions can also lower room temperatures, enhancing sleep comfort. Taking a lukewarm shower approximately 30 minutes before bedtime is another effective measure; while an icy shower might sound tempting, cool water lowers body temperature without causing discomfort later.

To prevent bedrooms from heating up during the day, keeping curtains and blinds closed is crucial, especially for children and babies who require cooler sleeping conditions and lighter clothing in hot weather. Other tips include utilizing facial mist sprays, wearing blackout sleep masks, and freezing a hot-water bottle overnight to serve as a makeshift cooling pack. Though heatwaves can disrupt sleep patterns, making small adjustments to bedding, room temperature, and bedtime routines can significantly improve sleep quality during the summer months.
