Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in Transformers and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh series, has passed away at the age of 85. His family confirmed that Cullen died peacefully on Wednesday at his Los Angeles residence, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen’s illustrious career began in Canadian television and radio. He rose to prominence in 1984 when he first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated series, a role he reprised in seven Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, along with various spin-offs. His portrayal of the heroic leader of the Autobots became a defining element of the franchise, earning him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011.
Cullen was equally beloved for his portrayal of Eeyore, the gloomy yet endearing donkey from the Winnie the Pooh franchise. He voiced Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, along with numerous other television adaptations, films, and video games, endearing himself to audiences across generations.
Throughout his career, Cullen’s vocal talents extended to other memorable characters, including KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in Knight Rider, as well as providing the eerie clicking sounds of the creature in the 1987 film Predator. He also voiced the mighty King Kong in the 1976 remake, showcasing his versatility and range as a voice actor.
Cullen often credited his brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, with influencing Optimus Prime’s noble demeanor, advising him to depict the character as a hero who embodied strength without aggression. In recognition of his contributions to the entertainment industry, Cullen received a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023, cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure in popular culture.
