Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is positioning his country as the world’s preeminent hub for drone defense technology. His announcement that Ukraine will provide the US and Middle Eastern allies with expertise and equipment to counter Iranian Shahed drones marks a new chapter in Ukraine’s transformation from war-torn nation to strategic global partner.

The initiative was prompted by requests from multiple nations. Zelenskyy confirmed conversations with Gulf and Middle Eastern leaders from five countries — the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait — and acknowledged a direct US appeal. In response, he issued orders for Ukrainian drone defense equipment and specialists to be deployed in support of allied nations.

The expertise on offer is uniquely credible. Over four years of all-out war, Russia has subjected Ukraine to tens of thousands of Shahed drone attacks, including a record barrage of over 800 in a single night. This extraordinary exposure forced Ukraine to become a world leader in anti-drone innovation, producing low-cost interceptors that have repeatedly proved their effectiveness under combat conditions.

Ukraine’s manufacturing capacity has grown to match global demand. With domestic production now outpacing battlefield requirements, the country is capable of supplying systems and know-how to foreign partners without compromising its own defenses. Zelenskyy confirmed this explicitly, stating that assistance would only be provided if it did not weaken Ukraine’s own capabilities.

The diplomatic architecture surrounding this offer is deliberate. Zelenskyy has tied defense cooperation to broader support for Ukraine’s peace efforts with Russia, ensuring that every transaction reinforces Kyiv’s international standing. As the Iran crisis temporarily redirects global attention, Ukraine is using the moment to deepen partnerships and ensure that its struggle remains embedded in the international community’s strategic calculus.
