Trump Hits NATO Hard, Calls Alliance Useless as Iran Operation Succeeds

President Donald Trump unleashed one of his strongest criticisms of NATO on Tuesday, calling the alliance essentially useless after its members refused to support the US military campaign against Iran. Trump posted his criticism on Truth Social before repeating his displeasure to journalists in the Oval Office. He said the alliance’s refusal to help was both disappointing and a clear sign of its fundamental flaws.

The perception that NATO members free-ride on American military spending has been central to Trump’s critique of the alliance for years. He has pointed to the billions of dollars the US spends annually to protect European nations as evidence of a deeply inequitable arrangement. Tuesday’s remarks represented his most pointed articulation of that view.

Trump described the Iran military campaign as a success that rendered NATO’s absence irrelevant. He said Iran’s navy, air force, radar systems, and anti-aircraft infrastructure had all been dismantled. He also claimed that Iranian leaders had been removed at every significant level, effectively ending Tehran’s capacity to threaten US partners or global stability.

These are sweeping claims with enormous implications for the Middle East and the broader international order. If Iran’s military and leadership have genuinely been neutralized, the region’s power structure would shift in ways not seen since the end of the Cold War. Trump appeared intent on positioning these outcomes as the result of American decisiveness rather than multilateral effort.

The damage to NATO caused by Trump’s public dismissal may take considerable time and effort to repair. Allied governments are caught between the need to defend their positions and the desire to avoid a deeper rupture with Washington. The coming diplomatic exchanges will be closely watched.
