Polish and German leaders demonstrated solidarity on Ukraine policy during a joint appearance emphasizing European interests. Donald Tusk and Friedrich Merz delivered coordinated statements insisting that any peace agreement must include meaningful European participation in negotiations and implementation.

The German chancellor articulated what he described as a clear course of action requiring that no decisions about Ukraine and Europe be made without Ukrainians and Europeans at the table. This position reflects widespread European anxiety about being sidelined in discussions that will fundamentally shape continental security architecture.

Merz spoke following his phone consultation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reinforcing messages of support and solidarity. He emphasized that there must be no dictated peace imposed on Ukraine without its consent and participation in determining final terms.

The Polish prime minister echoed these sentiments, highlighting the particular concerns of countries neighboring Ukraine about the conflict’s resolution. Poland has absorbed millions of Ukrainian refugees and provided substantial military and humanitarian assistance throughout the war.

Their joint statement comes as American envoys prepare to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. European leaders are working to ensure that any frameworks emerging from these discussions respect established principles of international law and European security interests.
